The 100 Year Old Environmental Solution

Stainless Steel Evnironment

Stainless steel products have been around for more than a century now. That number alone speaks volumes about the usefulness of stainless steel. What’s even better for the industry is that the number of applications for stainless steel is on a continual rise. This means, that more and more stainless steel products are being produced every single day. Given the vast variety of stainless steel, manufacturers of these products hardly have a difficult time in selecting the appropriate type of stainless steel for their product. This begs the question though, what makes stainless steel so popular and why has it been dubbed as the 100-year-old environmental solution?

Key Characteristics of Stainless Steel

To understand the usefulness of stainless steel, we need to acquire basic knowledge about the features of stainless steel that sets it apart from the rest of the core metals and alloys used for manufacturing various products across numerous industries. There are mainly three different characteristics of stainless steel that makes it ideal for several applications. These are:

  • High Corrosion Resistance and Staining Resistance
  • Low Maintenance
  • Familiar Lustre

Deficiency in other Materials

One of the biggest problems with metal and alloys that preceded stainless steel was they all rusted quite easily. In other words, the corrosion resistance or the staining resistance in those metals and alloys were very low. As a result, the durability of those metals and alloys were not as high as most consumers wanted them to be. These materials wore out after a relatively short period of use and had to be replaced over and over again. This greatly increased the cost of several applications, and as a result, the prices of many products made with these metals or alloys were comparatively very high.

Why Stainless Steel is an Environmental Solution

Once stainless steel came into the picture about 100 years ago, people found a remarkable alternative to all the materials that were prone to corrosion and rusting. Since stainless steel has very high corrosion and staining resistance, it does not rust under normal circumstances. Even if stainless steel is exposed to abundant moisture and air, chances are that it will not rust for a very long time, provided that the quality of the stainless steel is top-notch. Given their ability to withstand the hostile elements of the environment, stainless steel products earned the nickname of the “environmental solution”. Here is a list of some of the most popular stainless steel applications and products:

  • Architecture– The use of stainless steel is justified by both practical and aesthetic reasons. Since the durability of this material is much greater than that of others, it acts as ideal building blocks.
  • Automotive Bodies– Stainless steel bodies were used in concept cards throughout the 1930s and the 1970s. Several vehicles today are made with stainless steel.
  • Jewelry– Stainless steel is combined with valadium and 12% nickel alloy to form class and military rings.
  • Dentistry– Sterilized surgical equipments such as needles, temporary crowns, endodontic files etc are made from stainless steel.
